York, one of England's most beautiful cities with a history going back over 2000 years. The walled city was built and fortified by the Roman invaders and centuries later was invaded by the Vikings. Campers will visit the well-preserved remains of the original settlement at the unique Jorvik Viking Centre and York's most famous building, the stunning York Minster begun by William the Conqueror in 1080. In the Middle Ages, thanks to its position on the River Ouse, the city flourished and was a major international trading port. Today, visitors can walk around the walls, shop in the narrow cobbled streets of the world-famous Shambles, visit the National Rail Museum, stroll along the riverside quays or enjoy a cruise on the beautiful River Ouse.

For Young Golfers To Learn, Practice And Play At One Of The Finest Instructional Centres In Europe ...

... for golfers - beginners, advanced or somewhere in-between,
seeking to achieve or improve a handicap, develop their game or looking
to improve their competitive objectives.

Leading pros utilize an array of the latest state-of-the-art golf-teaching machines and systems designed to accelerate the learning process. Campers are dedicated to improvement, having committed to no less than five hours of instruction and play each week day. Definitely not for those timid about a commitment to golf!

OUTSTANDING FACILITIES
The Golf Camp is held at a top-quality Golf Academy just a short drive from our campus. There is a new gently undulating putting green where campers practise and enjoy serious (but fun!) competitive games. Because the short game is so important, the Academy has a new pitching area with various targets within a 100-yard range. During inclement weather there are several covered driving bays and an indoor putting green.

TOP TEACHING PROS
PGA instructors with extended experience are teaching our campers and helping them to improve all aspects of their game. Lessons are held during every weekday morning and for a further ninety-minute session in the afternoon.

ACTIVITIES
A wide variety of additional activities are offered daily to all campers after their principle programmes have finished, and on weekends. The wonderful aspect of these activities is that they all involve both instruction and play, being supervised by competent coaches and counsellors with the requisite skills, experience and most importantly, enthusiasm.

Creative Art programme is designed to develop and stimulate creativity in the visual arts for campers of all abilities from beginners to those who have already reached a high standard and may even be preparing for art school. Campers will draw, paint, model and sculpt both in and out of the fully equipped art-room. The programme will encourage young artists to explore, create and express themselves in many art forms under the watchful guidance and informative instruction of a professional art educator who is also an accomplished artist.

What Happens At Creative Arts Camp?
The course will spark the imagination of each camper by teaching many aspects of the art world including visual arts building, discussions on art history, aesthetics and problem solving whilst working on a group art project. The enthusiastic teaching staff will encourage artistic exploration through various art mediums and will provide expert instruction on the skills and techniques planned, to include painting, drawing, sculpture, print-making, and hands-on three dimensional design. Campers will paint and draw in the open air, choosing from the many historic buildings and quaint corners in York, elegant stately country houses and gardens or the magnificent scenery of the Yorkshire Moors, all close to camp.

The visit programme will promote discussion on some of the great British and International art from around the world, enabling the group to embrace cultural differences in art. The Creative Art Director will choose visits from the National Portrait Gallery in York, the York Art Gallery that features international travelling exhibitions, the stunning and thought provoking works from the permanent and visiting exhibitions at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and, further afield, the fascinating 'matchstick men' Lowry Gallery in Manchester.

At the end of the course there will be an art reception and show displaying the individual art made by the campers and Group Mural.

The Creative Arts Director is Chris-Tina Fogle, a professional, visual arts specialist teacher with years of experience in working with young people. Art is Chris-Tina's profession and her passion. Performing Arts Camp ( Ages 10 - 17 )

yorkperformingartsshow1

Designed equally for the enthusiastic or the talented young actor, singer or dancer - and all who love the stage performance and have 'stars in their eyes'. The programme is run by an experienced team headed by the charismatic and talented Director, Michaela Warrilow, an experienced stage and TV actress who has years of experience in developing programmes for young people.

The skills talents and aspirations of each were soon established and goals were set. Although some campers were enthusiastic beginners and others established achievers Michaela identified singers from the pop world with everything from ballads to hip-hop; a budding mezzo-soprano heading for the opera stage; some who had acted in modest school plays and others in major theatrical productions; dancers from delicate ballet-trained young ladies to tough street dancers with amazing skills.

What a mix!
The next step was a session on voice projection, in English, so that everyone gained confidence. As the stage work moved on with singing, dancing and acting the group divided into teams who discussed and recommended to Michaela what the theme of the final night production would be. 'Global Communication' was born! So, the campers developed not just individual skills but singers acted and dancers sang and everyone learned to collaborate on ideas and performance. There was laughter, sulking, little disappointments and hard work along the way but everyone worked together so that it would be 'Alright on the Night'!.

The result of all this commendable endeavour was a thrilling and triumphant last night performance, enjoyed by the enthusiastic audience that packed the Theatre. They cheered the dance routines, the choruses, duets and solo singing and the acting. Everyone had a chance to show off their specialist talents but everyone also sang and acted and danced! Each individual became a real part of what was a stunning achievement by the group who, under the expert guidance of Michaela and Jenny, put the whole show together themselves.

From 2007 to 2008 -
In 2008 there will be another group of campers and a new theme will be chosen but there is no doubt that every camper coming to York will have the time of their lives working and playing hard, learning and developing skills and talents and collaborating as a team on a stage production devised by the group from concept to concert performance. On the way they will learn about stagecraft, lighting, stage production, scenery, make-up, the role of humour, voice production and much more.

At York, there are practise rooms and a magnificent stage with quality sound projection and excellent lighting for the last night production. The theatre can hold an audience of 800 spectators. Parents are welcome but in case you are unable to get there a DVD of the Last Night Performance is produced for every participant!

An Experienced Performing Arts Director
Michaela Warrilow is once again the Performing Arts Director. She is a dynamic, qualified arts specialist and has acted and directed plays on television and in theatres all over Britain and abroad over the past 20 years. She also writes and directs her own plays and has won numerous awards including Best Original Play in both 2004 and 2005. She believes passionately that the use of drama is a fresh way of challenging behaviour and can positively change lives. The team that Michaela will head up also includes Jenny, an experienced professional dance specialist, who worked with s in Cork in 2007 as well as new specialists that have been added for 2008 - a Piano accompanist, a Music Director and a Stage Manager.

English Language Camp ( Ages 10 - 17 )

yorkenglishlesson1

On arrival at Camp the students are assessed and divided into ability and age groups. Later, as progress is made, students may be upgraded. The York language camp has 15 hours a week of targeted language instruction, usually in groups of 8-10 campers of all levels of ability. The students learn language basics by practising speaking together, under the guidance of the teachers, based on using a range of specially chosen, interesting subjects that become short but fascinating 'projects'. Students role play, develop ideas and discuss them - continuously using their improving English.

The work is serious but the approach is light and informal, always aimed at retaining the interest level of the students. It really works! Individual groups will often move outside for lessons in selected open-air settings around the campus. There are special excursions for the English groups to local villages and places of interest where they use Work Sheets with questions, all in friendly competition. The results of all these efforts are discussed and reinforced during the week so that together the teaching staff and the students achieve great results. At the end of Camp, students are awarded their certificates and a detailed report is sent independently to each family.

After the morning sessions the campers from all programmes get together to enjoy the mixture of Village Camp afternoon and evening activities, further increasing their use of English with the friends they will make from all over the world.

Some adventure activities will be half-day and others will take up a full day, usually returning well in time for a shower before evening meal. Participants in this action-packed programme need to have the requisite level of physical fitness, although no special skills or qualifications are required. There will be a mid-week break for an excursion and over the weekend there are no strenuous activities with a full day excursion on Saturday and a relaxing 'chill-out' day at Camp on Sunday.

Football Camp ( Ages10 - 17 )

yorksoccor

The soccer camp offers an outstanding experience to young players who will play soccer every morning and early afternoon before joining in a wide choice of other sports and fun leisure activities in the late afternoons.

The Course Leader is Neil O'Donnell, a qualified UEFA coach with years of coaching experience, during much of this time specialising in developing young players and Academy Teams. He has coached players of all abilities from those who wish to enjoy their soccer by simply playing better, right through to highly talented potential future stars who see the Camps soccer course as a step along the way on their dreams to become professionals. The Assistant Soccer Coach in 2007 was Marcio Miranda, a popular, enthusiastic and talented qualified Brazilian Coach who is returning in 2008 to bring his brand of exotic South American flair and skills to the sessions.

After assessing each young footballer the comprehensive coaching programme begins in earnest with sessions devoted to:

Individual skills
Techniques
Corners, free kicks and penalty-taking

Short 5 or 6 a-side sessions

Sportsmanship

CAMP HIGHLIGHTS
A much appreciated highlight in 2007 was a surprise personal appearance by Gerry Ryan, an Irish International who played in the Premiership for Derby County and Brighton and Hove Albion, playing in the Cup Final against a star-studded Manchester United when the original game was drawn and the replay was lost. Every year a player of this stature meets the campers. Generally, campers are photographed with him and afterwards a session where he answeres questions from the campers and gives advice on all aspects of the game and life as a professional player.

Another surprise appearance in 2007 was by the amazing Seana "Sticks" Cooke, currently a 20-year young international star with the top Arsenal Ladies side and Ireland Ladies - and a brilliant Freestyle Football artist. This kind of surprise awaits 2008 campers.
